ALL YEARS - FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parent/Caregiver
Welcome back to all our families for Semester 2.
I would also like to give a very special welcome to all our students and families who are joining our school for the first time this semester.
Throughout the first two weeks of this term, we have celebrated the outstanding accomplishments of our students in the first semester of this year. We acknowledged those who excelled in various subjects at Perth Modern School. These celebrations go beyond academic success to appreciate community service and participation in the broader aspects of the community. Engaging in diverse school activities helps students develop crucial skills like communication, leadership, and empathy. Our goal is to equip all students not only to participate in the world but also to lead, innovate, and propel society forward. Congratulations to all our award recipients. As we enter Semester 2, let's continue to build on our progress and strive for excellence in all our pursuits.
Next week 7-10 August the school also will be presenting a major musical theatre performance of The Addams Family. This is an opportunity for more than hundred of our students to participate in an amazing opportunity to develop their confidence and create an experience for the whole Perth Modern School community. Please consider purchasing tickets to support these talented students - it will be a fun night out for the whole family. Tickets can be purchased via www.trybooking.com/CSBMI
Our term began with our parent teacher afternoon and evening with many of our parents taking the opportunity to meet with their children’s teachers and working in partnership with the school to support their child’s educational journey. This was followed by the professional learning day for teachers, where all teachers explored teaching and learning strategies for gifted students and also students with neurodiversity. Perth Modern School is an incredibly complex and positive environment that supports students in their desire to be exceptional. Our teachers are very dedicated and take their profession and the care for our children very seriously.
Throughout this Semester we have students visiting China, Japan, New Zealand, Canberra and NASA in the USA. These students are competing in world championship competitions and also representing the school in music, science, humanities and languages.
Our Year 12 students are entering the final term of their ATAR studies. Over the school holidays many students sat entry examinations for medicine and were also busy exploring entry into universities across Australia.
We wish all students and families a successful start to the new Semester.
Warm regards
Mitchell Mackay

ALL YEARS - CITY OF SUBIACO URBAN SAFETY ROAD PROGRAM
The City of Subiaco is seeking feedback about an Urban Road Safety Program proposal for the Subiaco East and Subiaco Station precincts. This is a Mains Roads WA funded road safety improvement project, which aims to create a safer environment for all road users through reducing vehicle speeds in the area. This program has been proposed to be undertaken in the Subiaco East and Subiaco Station precincts.
The scope of work of this proposal includes:
- Installation of 40km/h speed sections in these two precincts (please see concept design for locations).
- Installation of a mini roundabout on Subiaco and Coghlan Roads intersection.
- Installation of raised plateaus with coloured asphalt combined at various road sections (please see concept design for locations).
- Installation of a raised wombat crossing on Station Street between Marketlane (Coles) and the Subiaco Station (see Subiaco Station precinct concept plan).
- Installation of brick paved entry statements at seven intersections (please see concept design for locations).
- Installation of signs and line marking in accordance with Main Roads WA Guidelines.
Parenats and staff are invited to provide feedback and insights on this proposal. To find out more about the project, view the concept designs, FAQs and to make comment, please visit https://www.haveyoursay.subiaco.wa.gov.au/urban-road-safety before Monday, 5 August 2024.

ALL YEARS - 2024 HOUSE TROPHY TALLY
At the end of Term 2 we enjoyed getting together with other House members during House Assemblies, and thank you to the student house representatives, who did an excellent job at coordinating and running these assemblies. House Dance on the final day of term was also a huge success! Congratulations to the winning House - Brown. Well done to all involved, the performances were outstanding.
The current House tally is seeing Brown out in front, followed closely by Parsons. Students, ensure you are getting involved in House competitions and activities to help your House bring home the trophy!
During Week 3 we have our NAIDOC week scavenger hunt competition happening, as well as our Olympics quiz competition. In Week 4 we have House Benchball scheduled at lunchtime, so students please watch out in the notices if you’re interested in participating.
ALL YEARS - OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A WEBSITE DEVELOPED BY STUDENTS
Are you a parent looking to have a website or something similar developed?
Mr Martin Skelly has a Year 10 Computing Science class and would like to give them a ‘live’ project. Students would interview the client and ascertain their needs before developing a solution. Ideally this would be a fairly substantial project to take up a term of work. Examples would be something like a website where customers could log in, search products and communicate with the business (or whatever the client needed.)
If this interests you, please contact martin.skelly@education.wa.edu.au
ALL YEARS - CRAIG SILVEY AWARD FOR YOUNG WRITERS
ALL YEARS - CONVERSATION SERIES EVENT: TALKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE ABOUT CONSENT
With consent education becoming mandated in Australian schools, many parents are overwhelmed with what is being taught and the need to continue the conversations at home - conversations they were often not afforded as young people themselves.
The parent presentation alleviates parents’ concerns and explains the gendered cultural drivers behind young people’s behaviour in relationships; frames age-appropriate information about consent; and simplifies how to engage young people in open, honest and rewarding conversations. Must see event.
Date: Wednesday, 11 September (changed from 4 September)
Venue: Cyril Tyler Auditorium
Time: 6.00pm
Bookings essential: www.trybooking.com/COVWS
