ALL YEARS - FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Every year, our students conduct an ANZAC service that acknowledges the 300 Perth Modern School students who fought in WW1, WW2 and Vietnam. It also acknowledges the sacrifice of the indigenous soldiers who fought for their country in the major world conflicts. This year we recognised one of our past students Hobart Douglas Firns. Douglas was a Perth Modern School student in 1911 and fought in Gallipoli in 1915 in the Battle of Hill 60. He was killed in action in August 1915 and is commemorated for his bravery and sacrifice. His name can be found on the school Cenotaph.
On Tuesday of Week 2, teachers across Western Australia stopped work to discuss their conditions and pay. Our teachers are passionate about quality education for children and the need to ensure that teaching is a profession that attracts and retains people who are intelligent and caring. Our teachers care about the students at Perth Modern School and have ensured that there was minimum disruption to student’s education. The school appreciates the tremendous support it has received from parents and the community. We are very fortunate that Perth Modern School is a school that attracts the very best teachers who are privileged to work with amazing students from families who value education for their children and support this wonderful school.
Earlier in the term, TISC announced that they would be removing the 10 per cent bonus applied to Mathematics and Language subjects in the calculation of the Year 12 ATAR. The school met with the CEO of TISC and expressed the concerns of the parents and students at Perth Modern School. Perth Modern School students Thanos Limnios and Erik Kao were also invited to meet with the Minister at Parliament House to discuss the changes to the WACE scaling. The Minister thanked them for their insightful conversation and for sharing their perspectives on the issue. TISC has reassessed their original decision and have extended the timeline to allow further consultation to occur.

Warm regards

ALL YEARS - ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE - 'IKAGAI' - WEDNESDAY, 15 MAY
ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY FESTIVAL 2024
Join us on Wednesday, 15 May for the opening of our 2024 Arts and Technology Festival titled: IKIGAI, a celebration of purpose and creativity inspired by the Japanese concept of Ikigai, meaning a reason for being. Hosted by Arts and Technology, this week-long festival offers students a platform to showcase and explore a diverse range of experiences. From Visual Art masterpieces to interactive Digital Technology projects featuring robotics and coding; purpose-built Materials and Design products and Food Technologies projects; our students will showcase their talents in an engaging exhibition running throughout the week in the Mills Building.
Don't miss the exhibition opening on Wednesday evening from 6.00pm. A visual display of student work from Years 7-12 will adorn the walls of Mills, accompanied by a captivating soundscape, inspired by our recent Year 12 Drama production of 'The Tempest'. The Materials and Design students will illuminate the evening with their fire pit displays, offering guests the chance to toast some treats. The festivities continue with a mesmerising Dance performance in Casey Theatre, followed by scripted monologues being performed by Drama students from Years 10, 11, and 12, offering a glimpse into their Semester 1 practical exam preparations.
We invite you to join us from 6.00pm in the Mills Building on Wednesday, 15 May for the opening and showcase of student work. Discover your own Ikigai as we celebrate the passion and creativity of our school community.

ALL YEARS: ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS
ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS (Every day matters)
The Department of Education’s guiding principle for attendance is that every day matters. Although most students attend school regularly, some students struggle to attend every day. Some reasons are legitimate. The following information is for parents whose child has ‘other’ (simple or complex) reasons for not attending school.
The Department recommends the following three approaches to improve attendance:
Promote - Parents can use a strong rationale for attending school every day. Research shows positive correlations between attendance, engagement and accomplishment. Life skills, accumulated knowledge and positive relationships are clear benefits of a high attendance rate.
Prevent - Monitor attendance for patterns, and act early to find out underlying reasons why your child is not attending. Facilitate consistent sleep (8-9 hours) and healthy eating habits.
Respond - Let the school know the reason why your child is going to be or has been absent from school as soon as possible. It is appreciated that you communicate by 9.00am so that your child is accounted for. Refer to the contact options below. A holiday during school term is classified as an unauthorised vacation. If you still choose to go, continue to communicate to seek possible support for the absent student. Cultural/religious/medical reasons are authorised.
AbsenteesTo advise the school of absences, please email or SMS the Name of student, Advocacy and Reason for Absence.
1. Complete the Absence Note in the Parent Portal of Compass (our preference).
2. Email the Student Services absent email: perthmodern.absentees@education.wa.edu.au
3. SMS the Absentee number: 0409 109 784
When a student is absent, parents will receive an SMS attendance notification. Parents are to write an Absent Note in Compass or contact Student Services (details above).
We thank you for your assistance.
ALL YEARS: REMINDER THAT MOBILE PHONES MUST BE SWITCHED OFF AT SCHOOL
Reminder: The Student Mobile Phones in Public Schools Policy took effect from the start of Term 1, 2020.
The policy requires all public schools to implement a ban on the use of mobile phones for all students from the time they arrive at school to the end of the school day. This extends to the use of smart watches which need to be on airplane mode during this period. The policy aims to reduce distractions in class and improve student engagement.
Under the policy:
- Students in Years 7 to 12 are allowed to have their phone in their possession, but must turn it off and keep it out of sight until the end of school.
Exceptions are allowed for students who have approval from the principal to use a phone to monitor health conditions, or where teachers give students permission to use mobile phones for a specific purpose.
If students need to contact their parents/carers, they can do so through the school’s administration. Likewise, if parents/carers need to get a message to their children, they should call the school.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

2024 SPHINX SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES AVAILABLE
Introduction
The Sphinx Scholarship Fund is a great success story for the Perth Modernian Society Inc. and the Sphinx Foundation Inc. Having started in 2008 with a single donation from Modernian Jim Cundill (dec.), donations and good investment strategies have since swelled the fund to $1.5M now, and earnings on the capital sum will permit the 44 awards listed below to be awarded in December 2024. The scholarships and bursaries are therefore one of Perth Modern School’s very special features.
Academic Subject Awards
Under the constitution of these awards, they are to be awarded to students, who, in the opinion of the selection panel, demonstrate outstanding talent and passion in the nominated subject area as well as demonstrating how the award would be used to assist achievement of academic excellence in the respective subject area. The donors have specified that the money awarded is to provide enrichment in the subject area beyond that provided in the normal school program.
Equity Awards
These awards are aimed at facilitating the achievement of educational success by removing barriers and providing access to opportunities to current Perth Modern School students. The School offers many opportunities for enhanced education, and the awards aim to assist students who might otherwise be disadvantaged to take full advantage of them. Applicants or their parents, need to show that they have personal circumstances of financial or other need such that the award will be most beneficial in removing barriers, overcoming a specific disadvantage, or in providing access to opportunities to facilitate the achievement of educational success. Applicants are expected to have achieved well in their academic courses and/or external competitions, and ideally to also have demonstrated an interest in community service.
The following scholarships will be available for Year 10 students to apply for in 2024. Further information of how to apply and deadlines will be communicated to parents and students later this term.
