Please arrange for your child to bring small denominations of $1 and $2 coins on the day where they can purchase from a variety of stalls and participate in games and activities. Charity Day is also a free dress day for students and we encourage students to come to school in bright colours or in their tropical holiday outfits.
Please find attached a list and associated pricing of the stalls and activities planned for this fun-filled day.

ALL YEARS: DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS
Secondary schooling scholarships are now open for applications through the Department of Education.
A range of scholarships are on offer, including scholarships for students who:
- attend a country school; or
- attend a Perth public school; or
- live in the Fremantle area; or
- attend Cannington Community College, Kent St SHS or Como Secondary College.
Department of Education scholarships support studies in all years of secondary school, with most open to students currently completing Year 10 or 11 who intend to complete the WACE. In addition, students currently in Years 6 to 9 may be eligible for one of the two specific scholarships below:
- James and Rose Coombe Scholarships for regional and remote students. A number of these scholarships are available each year and successful applicants can reapply in subsequent years. The funding amount starts at $1,000.
- Maud Zervos Education Grants for students with a parent/caregiver who has a disability related to spinal or limb paralysis or limb loss. A 'rollover clause' in this scholarship makes funding available for every year of secondary study, subject to satisfactory progress. The funding amount starts at $750 in lower secondary and rises to $1 000 for upper secondary studies.
Applications for our scholarships close at 5.30pm on Thursday, 10 December 2020.
Scholarship eligibility criteria, application forms and information on how to apply can be found on the Department's scholarships webpage below.
ALL YEARS: THIRD PARTY APPLICATIONS
The Department of Education (DoE) is requiring ALL parents/caregivers to provide approval for the use of Third Party Applications (apps) such as QKR.
Online Third Party Services may require:
- students or teachers to create separate student accounts
- students to participate in online activities or upload content
- students or teachers to provide personal student and/or parent information.
These services provide functions such as:
- school or student management
- teacher administration
- student learning content or activities
- communication tools.
Online third party services:
- are provided to you by a vendor external to the Department of Education
- are free or paid services
- can include versions that may be downloaded onto staff and student devices.
There are always some risks involved with providing personal information to a Third Party Service. The level of risk will depend on the vendor’s security and privacy processes.
Third Party Applications used in schools across Western Australia have been risk assessed by the DoE and this information will be provided as part of the approval process.
Perth Modern School is in the process of collating the various Third Party Applications used across the school and will provide an electronic format for parents to indicate their approval prior to the end of Term 4.
We look forward to all parents completing the approvals process in a timely manner as we enter the 2021 school year.
ALL YEARS: THE NEW SENIOR YEARS UNIFORM
Thank you to those parents who provided feedback either directly to staff or through the P&C. As a result the following clarifications are provided:
- The timeline for the phasing in and out of uniform items is clearer.
- Knee length has been changed to ‘around knee length.’
- The language in the policy is more gender neutral. Trousers are included as part of the formal uniform for girls.
From March 2021 parents will be able to purchase the new Senior Years Uniform items from Lowes. These items include a male and female polo shirt, a plaid skirt, Music Uniform and navy blazer. The new Unform items are for students in Years 10 - 12 only to recognise their transition to Senior School. The school understands this change will occur over a transition period.
The Uniform Shop and the Second Hand Uniform Shop are available to assist with items to be purchased.
All students are expected to observe the Uniform Policy and we ask all parents and students to support the school in this regard.
Please find attached the updated 2021 Perth Modern School Uniform Policy.
Parents experiencing financial hardship with regards to the uniform should contact Student Services or the Finance Office for assistance.
ALL YEARS: SCHOOL BOARD PARENT REPRESENTATIVES

Sonya Derry, Jessica O’Sullivan, Ajay Warrier and Alana Dowley are the successful nominees for terms of either two-years or three-years. We thank all parent nominees for their interest in serving on the School Board.
We also acknowlegde the parent representatives who have come to an end of their tenure on the School Board- Dr Nicholas Waldron, Ishtar Barranco and Veena Mendez and we thank them for their hard work and wonderful input over the last few years.

ALL YEARS: THANK YOU TO THE P&C
A huge thank you on behalf of all Perth Modern staff to the Parents & Citizens who put on a fabulous morning tea this morning to show their appreciation for all that the staff do.
It was a huge spread which 'wowed' the staff as they entered the staff room, making the choice of what to have for morning tea very difficult.
ALL YEARS: CITY OF SUBIACO DRAFT BIKE PLAN TUESDAY, 22 DECEMBER
Notice from the City of Subiaco:
With the increase in cyclists, old and new, it’s important the City works towards managing future growth of cycling infrastructure – this is what the City of Subiaco’s draft Bike Plan 2021 to 2025 aims to do.
The draft Bike Plan 2021 - 2025 provides a strategic direction for priority projects over the next five years, to better align the City with State-level cycling strategies and funding programs. The plan does not intend to define specific treatments for each project, as implementing these projects will need further community consultation and detailed design processes. The plan identifies and prioritises the key infrastructure projects for the City, along with other long-term projects to investigate.
This draft plan is the result of an extensive preliminary consultation process with the community, including several local schools, and we now seek feedback from the general public and key stakeholders prior to presenting the plan to Council for endorsement in early 2021.
To review the draft executive summary of the plan and have your say head to the link below before 4.00pm Tuesday, 22 December.
ALL YEARS: PUBLIC TRANSPORT 'SHOW YOUR GOOD SIDE' CAMPAIGN
Transperth has launched new passenger behaviour campaign 'Show your good side’
Perth Modern School receives both compliments and complaints regarding our students on public transport therefore we do ask you to please remind your child of the following when they are using public transport:
- Offering your seat to someone who needs it more than you.
- The volume of your music, even through headphones.
- Keeping clear of the doorways, on both the inside and outside of the train.
- Making sure your backpack isn’t in anyone’s way.
- Keeping your feet off the seats.
- Making sure your bike is secure on board a train.
Please see the link below for more information:
P&C Meeting
Please find below the recent Principal's Report to the P&C from Tuesday, 24 November 2020.
At our recent meeting the P&C approved our final item of support for 2020, a new track and exhibition lighting for the Mills Building lower floor at a value of $15,105.80. This area is used to display artworks from the Perth Modern School Art Collection and student framed work for the Arts and Technology Festival and Visual Arts Exhibitions. The new lighting system will provide a more attractive experience as well as operational flexibility for exhibiting artworks at their best.
More than $80,000 was distributed by the P&C in 2020 to assist the school and students, providing additional resources, facilities and amenities. This is on top of $110,000 in 2019 and $79,000 in 2018. It really shows families what a difference their P&C contributions make to the school and students. This year $78,000 in family contributions was made to the P&C, another very successful year at a time of uncertainty for many families.
Please see attached a summary of the support to the school by the P&C throughout 2020.
Tuesday, 16 February 2021 7.00PM
The next P&C Meeting will be held on Tuesday, 16 February 2021 at 7.00pm in the McCusker Boardroom in the Beasley Building. All parents and interested citizens are welcome.
