ALL YEARS - TISC ATAR CALCULATION CHANGES
Thank you to all the parents and students who have reached out to us and to TISC to share their feedback regarding the proposed alterations to the ATAR calculation process for 2026. We have received the communication below from TISC:
The TISC Board met on 15 March, 2024 and agreed to postpone implementation of the removal of the ATAR course bonuses for languages other than English, Maths Methods and Maths Specialist to 2027 at the earliest. This decision was influenced by the impact of the 2026 timeframe on the 2024 Year 10 students who are accelerating their studies and/or choosing Year 11 and 12 courses currently. TISC will consult with stakeholders on the impact of changes to the TEA calculation parameters over the remainder of 2024 and provide an update by the end of the year.

ALL YEARS - SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH
SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH INFORMATION
Perth Modern School encourages students to participate in the Science Talent Search.
This website contains all the information: Science Talent Search (stawa.net).
Entries are due to Mrs Helen Lydon by Monday, 12 August, so there is plenty of time to plan and carry out ideas. If there is enough interest, Mrs Lydon will advertise another meeting early next term. Remember - this is designed to be a STUDENT- LED project, done in the student's own time; wth it being the student's ideas and motivation, not the teacher's! And YES, there are cash prizes for winning and placed entries.
For now, students are to consider the THREE ways to participate, and start thinking of ideas (some starter ideas are on the website):
1) INVESTIGATION*: plan and conduct an original investigation, and produce a three-minute video to present and explain your findings
2) COMMUNICATION: create a 60 second video to explain a difficult or intriguing science topic. Or use a series of photographs to do the same.
3) ENGINEERING: plan and create a prototype to solve a problem.
* Students are required to run any investigation ideas past either Mrs Lydon or their Science teacher to check safety and feasibility. Students must fill in the required Risk Assessment form BEFORE starting (under Resources on the STS website).
