ALL YEARS: SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH COMPETITION
The Science Teachers' Association of WA (STAWA) invites students up to Year 12 to participate in the Science Talent Search competition. Cash prizes for projects that gain a place!
The Science Talent Search (STS) offers a range of categories to suit a wide variety of abilities and interests. It also provides students with an opportunity to expand their scientific literacy, by showing interest and understanding in the world around them and engaging in discussions about science.
The competition recognises the excellent work of the students in three (3) entry categories:
- Science Investigation
- Engineering
- Science Communication (includes Science Poster, Science Video, and Science Photography).
Start thinking NOW about ideas you would like to pursue, and get some friends to work with you. Students can call in to Mrs Lydon’s office to chat about their ideas. Entry submission from Monday, 7 August. (closes at school on Monday, 21 August)

ALL YEARS: CELEBRATING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
Perth Modern School students are achieving and participating in many areas outside of regular schooling, whether it is sport, the arts, music, academics or community service. Has your child achieved an award or accolade outside of school? Are they involved in helping the community? We want to hear all the wonderful stories about our students so we can celebrate them on social media, the school website and in the newsletter. Contact the Communications and Marketing Team with your stories by email at Thalia.Cole@education.wa.edu.au. Photos from the event/awards ceremony are very welcome.
ALL YEARS: TUTOR CENTRE UPDATE
Tutor Centre Numeracy and Literacy
At the end of the semester, the Tutor Centre sessions will reset and be removed from Student Schedules on Compass.
Student Services will set these up again for Semester 2 by checking progress from reports and collecting teacher and parent recommendations.
Emails will go out early in Semester 2 inviting students and their parents to consider taking this on again. For those that were enrolled in Semester 1, if you do not receive an email, it means that the student has progressed and will no longer need to attend to make space for others in more need.
For students that would like a study space while at school, the Library is staffed after school until 4.30pm Monday to Friday.
There are also specific Maths clubs for students. Interested students can find out more information about these clubs from their Maths teacher.
ALL YEARS: BRENDA MATTHEWS AND THE LAST DAUGHTER
All parents, students and members of the wider community are invited to a special screening of The Last Daughter, Brenda Matthew's award winning documentary film.
When: Saturday, 5 August
Time: 1.00pm
Venue: Cyril Tyler Auditorium
Brenda will deliver a keynote address, then the screening of her documentary, followed by a Q&A and then a book signing. We have secured her autobiography, The Last Daughter, for a special price of $26.50 (RRP $34.99) - Eftpos only.
THE STORY
Brenda’s first memories were of growing up in a loving white foster family, before she was suddenly taken away and returned to her Aboriginal family.
Decades later, she feels disconnected from both halves of her life. But the traumas of her past do not lie quietly buried. So, she goes searching for the foster family with whom she had lost all contact.
Along the way she uncovers long-buried secrets, government lies, and the possibility for deeper connections to family and culture. The Last Daughter is a documentary about Brenda’s journey to unearth the truth about her past, and to reconcile the two sides of her family.
